Restoran Kak Kak 佳佳点心茶楼

Address: No. 9, Jalan Maju, Taman Maju, Johor Bahru
Hours: 5:00 - 12:00 (closed on Tuesday)

Wanted to go to our beloved 果条仔 stall, but they were closed cos it's Wednesday. Alas, no way to satisfy the craving. Anyway, this gave us a good chance to try something new. I remembered there is a dim sum place near Pelangi, so went back to the car to look at the map. We asked a nearby bookshop (where we bought parking coupons from) and realized Kak Kak was just a few shops away!

Oh on the part about the parking coupons, the bookshop owner told us last month that we didn't have to put any coupons cos the government hadn't printed or distributed the new ones, so don't need to put for the entire month of April. Apparently the coupons came yesterday and it was sold out really quickly, and the first two weeks of May, we don't need to display the coupons.

Back to dim sum. So we found a seat at Kak Kak, and started ordering.

Very yummy fried carrot cake, soft in the inside but oh-so-crispy on the outside. Though this is nice, I would say the one we had at Chang Man was definitely better.

Beancurd skin with fish cake... ok only.

Chicken feet... taste was ok only.

Pork ribs. This was super duper nice, the meat was well marinated and very 入味.

Siew mai, bite size and really good.

皮蛋粥. It was different from the ones we eat in Singapore, but very nice... I think they put one whole salted egg in!

The lo mai kai is the best! The glutinous rice was very fragrant and tasted really great!

Total damage for 2 cups of tea and this spread only cost us RM$25.

Tried this place for dimsum after our massage at 古泉. Loved the food, especially the egg plant and the shark's fin dumpling. The chicken tasted like the kampong chicken we always have at Upper Thompson. The fishball can don't order, not that fantastic.

First bite, the taste explodes in your mouth... fragrance from the oyster sauce plus garlic.
Ever saw the Stephen Chow movie, 食神, with the chef that goes "太好吃了!" ... Thats exactly what we felt on the first bite of this, the secret is mainly in the sauce which is so good! Wanna make it last? Take a bite, then go for other food then come back to this again! 初恋的感觉!

Tender and great tasting chicken

油菜 was normal

Scallops dumpling... can't really taste the scallops

Xiaolongbao was really good, better than Dingtaifung
So naturally when we say 鼎泰丰,not everyone is convince whether it's really good or not. Let me clarify that when it first appeared in SG, I was not a fan of it as i felt it was overrated. Gradually the QC in 鼎泰丰's food has gotten alot better and is now one of my fave places for 小笼包. To say that its better naturally is saying alot!

Siew mai was great

Sharks fin dumpling is a must-order
I have to say i don't really have a good opinion of this dish when i ate it in SG, but I was always open to trying new food so hey whats the harm right? Amazing 上汤 which i suspect is seafood and chicken broth with really good ingredients like sharks fins inside! (Sorry WWF and Gordon Ramsey, yes we still eat sharksfins...) The dumpling skin is amazingly nice and the ingredients well mixed into the nice succulent soup, makes this dish one of the best in the shop.

Fishball - no big deal

Hubby and I suddenly got adventurous and decided to try out this old-school looking coffeeshop along Upper Thomson Road. We always eat the Kampong chicken opposite this row of shop-houses and though we always wanted to try Hua Nam, it just kept slipping our minds.

We were really excited to try out the dimsum here. The food was unfortunately just average. The uncle taking our orders kept asking us to try their specialty, the seafood dumpling, which turned out to be quite a disappointment. It was a bit fishy and pretty tasteless. We felt the price was a bit on the high side... definitely not worth coming back again.
